BEHIND THE DESIGN AND FIT OUT
The Caloundra SLSC has been perched on the edge of Caloundra’s beautiful coastline for some 80 years. Over this time it has played an important role in the local community both as a Surf Life Saving Club and as a social hub for locals and visitors. Over time harsh Australian elements had taken their toll to the much loved club.
In 2015 Open projects Group was awarded the contract to resuscitate this history rich club. Key to the design was keeping the casual beach culture with the use of sustainable environmental materials.
Highlighting the main dining area is the yellow Balau solid timber ceiling bringing an element of the sand and sea inside.
Solid hardwood trusses that were exposed during renovation were refinished and reused as an exposed ceiling featured adding size and depth to the venue.
Recycled timbers in a junk boat finish clad counters and bars throughout the space inviting the outside in with custom selected floor coverings and light timber wall cladding blending areas together.
From the outside you are presented with a modern venue which ties into the overall landscape using Futurewood cladding as a low maintenance alternative to any timber or weatherboard products.
As part of the CSLSC in the Pavilion, a cafeteria style area finished in hues of the beach and again using recycled timber as a feature cladding to the counter. The introduction of crisp whites, dark timber look laminates and sandy wall feature tiles give a modern yet coastal feel to the bathrooms and amenities areas.
New bases were constructed within the gaming area with new floor coverings and feature wall panelling using dark timber look laminates with express joins and mirror accents.
The project duration was approximately 12 weeks from onsite commencement.
